I decided to take part in this year’s Big Challenge, a business enterprise competition, as a friend of mine had taken part in it last year and really enjoyed it and did well. I am able to sew and had seen hair accessories were very fashionable at the moment, and so decided to tap into this market and started to make scrunchies and hairbands, calling my business Yo Scrunchi. I soon realised how popular my products were after my first sale and it just kicked off from there. I sold at several Christmas markets and had a hair accessory stand in my local café. I had a very busy two months making and selling in November and December. I entered two sub categories of the competition The Flying Start and I won that along with four other teams, and we were given a free stall in The Moor Market and also entered the Marketing and Media part of the competition and wrote a report on how I had marketed my business, and I won. I was also invited onto BBC Radio Sheffield to talk about the competition and my business which was a great experience.
The final part of the competition was to write a business report and do a presentation. Due to the current circumstances Covid19, the presentation evening had to be cancelled and the winners announcement was made live on YouTube and I am delighted to say that out of the 230 teams that originally entered the challenge from 18 schools across Sheffield, I won the overall competition as well as the Made in Sheffield award!
The overall experience has been good fun, challenging at times and hard work. However, it has all been worth it!
