A Visit from Barry and Margaret Mizen: A Powerful Message of Hope and Compassion

Last week, our Year 9 students welcomed Barry and Margaret Mizen to school, who transformed an unimaginable tragedy into a lifelong mission of peace, hope, forgiveness and compassion.

In 2008, Barry and Margaret’s beloved son, Jimmy Mizen, was tragically murdered in an act of senseless violence. Rather than allowing their grief to turn into bitterness, the Mizens chose a different path, one of forgiveness, courage, and the pursuit of a more compassionate world.

Speaking to our students with honesty, Barry and Margaret shared their story, not just of their loss of Jimmy, but of love. They spoke of Jimmy as a kind, thoughtful young man whose life was taken far too soon. In his memory, they established the Jimmy Mizen Foundation, working with young people to promote peace, kindness, and resilience in communities across the UK.

The talk resonated deeply with our students. Through their words, Barry and Margaret encouraged us all to reflect on the importance of forgiveness, the impact of our choices, and the responsibility we share in creating safer, more loving environments for everyone.

Jimmy’s legacy is one of light in the face of darkness. As a school community, we are inspired to honour that legacy by rejecting violence, cherishing every life, and choosing empathy over anger. The Mizens’ message reminds us that even in the  pain, we have the power to make the world a better place.

Together, let us carry forward Jimmy’s spirit. Let us spread kindness in our words and actions, stand up for peace, and believe in a future where every young person can grow up safe, supported, and loved.

Jimmy Mizen’s memory lives on, not only through the work of his incredible family but through every act of compassion we choose to make. May his story continue to shine as a testament to the enduring power of love .

God bless,

Suzanne
