SVP Engagement Day at Mount St Mary’s School, Spinkhill

A group of our Year 7 and Year 8 students recently had the opportunity to attend an SVP Engagement Day at Mount St Mary’s School, Spinkhill, Sheffield. They were joined by over 50 young people from Catholic schools across Hallam, Leeds, and Nottingham, all coming together to learn more about the work of the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP).

We were especially honoured to be accompanied for the whole day by Bishop Ralph, whose presence was a great source of encouragement to our young people. Also joining us were leaders from the SVP and Julz, the Youth SVP Manager, who spoke passionately about the Society’s mission.

The SVP was founded in 1833 by a group of students in Paris who were challenged to serve the poor of their city. Inspired by the example of St Vincent de Paul, they dedicated themselves to face-to-face service, offering practical support and spiritual guidance to those in need. Our students were moved by this story and inspired to consider how they could carry this mission forward in their own communities.

After a morning of learning and discussion, we shared lunch together before gathering for Mass in the church. The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Ralph, with Fr Peter, the resident priest, presiding. In a memorable and heartwarming moment, Fr Peter’s collie dog, Penny, also joined us for Mass!

As the day came to a close, our students reflected on everything they had learned. They are now excited to share the message of the SVP with our chaplaincy teams and are eager to start an SVP group in school, helping to support the Society and the people it serves.

This was a truly inspiring experience for our young people, and we look forward to seeing the impact they will make in our school and wider community.

God bless.
