Recently, four of our Year 8 students had the fantastic opportunity to visit Gussie’s Pantry in Chesterfield, as part of their work towards completing the Faith in Action Bronze Award.
Gussie’s Pantry is a wonderful community shop that supports individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, while helping them maintain their independence. Set out just like a regular shop, Gussie’s allows its members to choose a set number of items each week, ensuring they can pick food that best suits their household needs. In addition to food, the Pantry also offers a wide range of clothing and other essential accessories.
Our students, along with others from All Saints, St Pius, St Mary’s, St Bernard’s, and the McAuley School, spent the morning sorting through food and clothing donations. Their work helped ensure that the shop remained well organised and ready to serve those who rely on it each week.
After a couple of hours of hard work, the group travelled to St Mary’s Church in Chesterfield for a short liturgy, where they reflected on the importance of service and community. This was followed by lunch, before everyone said their goodbyes and returned to their schools.
This visit was a fantastic opportunity for our students to see how their efforts can make a real difference in their local community. I am very proud of the way they represented our school, living out the values of compassion, love and service.
God bless.
