Our students were in school on Remembrance Day itself this year, and our community came together last week to ensure the occasion was marked with the dignity and reflection it deserves. As a school, we gathered outside to honour the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in times of war and conflict.
The ceremony began with a beautiful and heartfelt performance of “Abide With Me” by the staff choir, conducted by our joint head of music, Mr Ward, which set a solemn and reflective tone for the occasion. Their voices created a powerful atmosphere of unity as students and staff prepared to observe this important moment together.
This was followed by the Last Post, performed by Mrs. Shields, calling us into a moment of deep reflection. The sound of the bugle echoed across the school grounds, inviting everyone to pause and remember.
We then observed two minutes of silence, standing together as a community in honour of all who lost their lives in conflict.
At the end of the silence, Mrs. Shields performed the Reveille, symbolising renewal, hope, and the continuing duty to carry forward the values of those who served.
Mr. Scriven then read the moving poem For the Fallen, including the timeless and poignant line “We will remember them.” His reading served as a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of all those who served.
This year’s gathering also encouraged us to reflect on the ongoing conflicts, hostilities, and tensions that continue to affect communities around the world today. While Remembrance Day allows us to honour the past, it also compels us to consider the present and the importance of working toward peace and understanding.
We were also honoured to be joined by four of our students who serve in the Air and Army Cadets, dressed smartly in full uniform. Their presence added dignity and authenticity to the commemoration, and highlighted the role young people play in upholding traditions of service and leadership.
Together, our school community stood in unity , to remember, to reflect, and to recommit ourselves to the values of peace, courage, and compassion.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
We will remember them.”
