We were delighted to welcome Dan, Bob and Richard from The Oakes into school to lead a special assembly for our Year 7 students.
Dan spoke to the students about the importance of the Bible, sharing what it means to him personally and how it has helped to shape his life. He even brought along a very special Bible, the actual Bible that his great-grandfather used when he was a ‘Gunner’ during the First World War. What a wonderful piece of family history!
Dan shared a memorable way of thinking about the word BIBLE: “Basic Information Before Leaving Earth!” He explained that the Bible can help guide us through life, giving us wisdom and direction as we make our way through our journey on earth.
To help the students understand this idea, Dan asked them to imagine they were going out for a walk. One brave student volunteered to come to the front and help with the demonstration.
The students eagerly called out suggestions about what they would need:
“You need a coat!”
“You need a hat!”
“You need shoes!
Richrd took each item out of a bag and the student put it on!
Dan then asked, “What else do you need?”
After a little thought, the students came up with the answer: “A map!”
The student was handed a map to hold.
“Exactly!” said Dan. He explained that you cannot get very far on a walk without a map, because you could easily get lost. In the same way, Dan explained, the Bible can be like a map for life. It can give us direction and help us know which path to take. If we don’t take the time to read it and listen to its message, we may find ourselves getting lost or heading in the wrong direction.
At the end of the assembly, all of the students were invited to take a free Bible with them if they wanted one.
A huge thank you to Dan, Bob and Richard from The Oakes for taking the time to come into school and share this important message with our Year 7 students. We really appreciate you helping us to think about the Bible, the guidance it offers and the direction it can provide throughout our lives.
